iPhone 8 review: Is the Apple iPhone 8 still worth buying?

Apple launched its iPhone 8 late in 2017, alongside its larger sibling iPhone 8 Plus as well as the iPhone X. When so many newer models of the iPhone have been released by Apple since the iPhone 8 was introduced, why should you still consider getting an 11th generation iPhone such as the iPhone 8?

One big selling point of the iPhone 8, when compared to many other newer models, is its price. The iPhone 8 is an excellent option if you want a more affordable Apple smartphone. When buying a refurbished iPhone 8, you can save even more without having to settle for lesser quality.

In this iPhone 8 review we’ll go through some of the features of the iPhone 8 that make it a great option for an Apple smartphone, even after a few years since its release. We’ll also give some advice regarding other potential smartphones that might match your needs better than the iPhone 8. So let’s jump in and see what the Apple iPhone 8 has to offer.

Design

If you are looking for a smartphone that looks stylish but not flashy, the iPhone 8 as well as the iPhone 8 Plus will not disappoint. Both models are available in red, silver, space gray and gold. Although there are other models with more colourful designs, such as the iPhone 11, the iPhone 8 does not pale in comparison with its frame consisting of glass and aerospace-grade aluminum.

However, one downside of the iPhone 8 can be its storage capacity, as the iPhone 8 version with 256 GB storage capacity was discontinued in 2019. Only two options of 64 and 128 GB were sold after that. With these two options, the iPhone 8’s memory might be too modest for some smartphone users.

Especially if you need plenty of space for pictures, music and apps, you might want to consider a phone with a larger memory capacity. However, if you are able to find a refurbished iPhone 8 from a reliable reseller, you can still get an iPhone 8 with the larger 256 GB of memory.

If the storage capacity of the iPhone 8 is small, so is its size. In case you are looking for a smaller sized Apple smartphone, the iPhone 8 is a great choice. With a display of only 4.7-inches, the iPhone 8 fits nicely in your hand and is easy to carry around as it weighs only 148 grams.

Screen

The 4.7-inch screen of the iPhone 8 is small but works still well for playing games, watching videos or whatever you might use your phone for. The iPhone 8 is equipped with a Retina HD display, meaning that you can have a satisfying user experience with a sufficient resolution. Especially in this price range, the iPhone 8’s Retina HD display is good value for your money. However, if you wish to have a more advanced display, you might want to consider some of the newer, but more expensive models, such as the iPhone XS.

Still, the iPhone 8’s display will provide a sharp and bright image. The brightness of iPhone 8’s display goes all the way to 625 nits, so you can enjoy using your phone even in bright sunlight. With the True Tone feature, the phone is able to adjust the screen’s brightness and colours based on the setting.

Camera

The rear camera of the iPhone 8 is able to match even some of the more advanced iPhone models. The iPhone 8 is equipped with a single 12-megapixel camera on the back that allows you to take stunning high quality photos.

One downside to the iPhone 8 and its camera is that it includes only a single Wide camera, whereas some other models have an additional telephoto lens – or even a third camera. However, the single 12-megapixel rear camera of the iPhone 8 will be sufficient for most people. The front camera is 7-megapixels and works well, for example for taking selfies. Again, there are models with a 12-megapixel front camera, but the more modest camera of the iPhone 8 will be enough for many.

The iPhone 8 is capable of 4K video recording as well as shooting slow-mo video. Both the front and rear camera also come with optical image stabilisation, making it easier for you to take handheld photos that are not blurry.

Some Apple fans might notice that the iPhone 8 is lacking Portrait Mode, Night Mode for taking photos in the dark as well as the various Portrait Lighting effects. However, all of these are just extra features and can be found in some of the newer and more expensive models.

Processor and battery life

Although the iPhone 8 does not have an equally powerful processor as many newer models, its A11 Bionic -chip is still capable of running games and other applications well. With the A11 Bionic -processor powering the iPhone 8, browsing the web and using social media is a smooth experience – not to mention everyday phone use such as making phone calls and sending text messages.

The iPhone 8 is compatible with Wireless charging and you can charge the phone’s battery from 0 to 50% in half an hour with the Fast charge feature. The battery of the iPhone 8 also can endure up to 13 hours of video playback as well as 40 hours of music with a single charge.

Although there are iPhone models with longer battery life as well as a more powerful processor, the iPhone 8 is still a valid option for most people and great value for money.
